Agree. The idea of starting with your own employees as a broad group of brand evangelists is that they each will have their own community, which they define, and which they communicate with in an authentic way. The brand/company can make available elements that they can use in their community engagements, but it has to be consistent with each individual's group identity -- an identity that merges they way they make a living with the way they live.

It's a whole new way of thinking about communicating and conversing. The models that get developed over the next couple of years are going to be very dynamic for marketers. Look for Facebook and Twitter to build tool sets that marketers can leverage -- they don't want to lose all that opportunity to the cadre of consultants that are building businesses on the open platforms.

I totally agree! And personally I think www.weareplaystation.com totally blew it. They left so much viral power untapped. Marketeers should proof that they can create a good viral around the key mission / USP of a company before they can even say 'we should have a community.

Feel free to read more about my analysis of the Playstation concept on http://hhvo.wordpress.com/2009/03/28/marketing-20-social-marketing-dont-start-with-your-community-until-youve-proven-that-you-deserve-one/

[...] Let someone else say it “E-Marketer’s CEO Geoff Ramsey gets at the essence of the issue with his commentary: “If you’re going to build a community, don’t center it around your product, but rather on something deeply relevant to a particular consumer group,” Ramsey said. He also suggested keeping fans of your brand pages happy by giving them a lot of content and letting them share the love with others.” If you want to know more about the article, then read the full article about Social media can be a marketing platform: It starts with brand evangelism [...]

This goes to show that social media sites continue to grow and this only offers a lot of promise to internet marketers. Social media sites can be the platform for the business and ideas.

I agree with you: it's not enough to "get" contacts / friends / followers. Brand are not interesting of lovable for what they are. They're interesting and useful for what they do to represent what they represent.
Brands should leverage on the relationship they start with consumers by continuously activating them.
Having them is not enough.
