How many pieces of anecdotal evidence does it take to make to make it real though? I would have to say that it is also in my experience that I am seeing less inventory in home and garden stores whether they are boutiques or national chains. Barely full shelves and safe choices of staples. However, in a recent review of clothing stores (national and boutique) in the Boston area, I noticed the more specialized and high end they were, the more fall inventory then contained. I felt myself excited by seeing something new and out-of-the box in these space. By contrast, the national chains were relying on the tried-and-true (read: boring) in an effort I imagine, to offer pieces that would be desirable to a wider range of consumers. I much prefer someone trying to attract me by differentiating themselves from the crowd in this economy. The last thing I want to do in this climate is to NOT stand out in a crowd.

Will you be following this post up with a holiday shopping one? I'm personally very curious to see how retail shops are going to handle the season.
